Ridesharing media recently reported that last week, more autonomous robot deliveries were launched to 50,000 more households in Sheffield in the UK.
These were done in partnership between Uber Eats and Starship Technologies.
What’s intriguing here is that the scheduled launch of Starship’s delivery robots for Sheffield was supposed to be in December last year. However, it is only the previous week that they were launched, according to reports. Or, maybe these are a different batch? Nevertheless, the people are having fun with them already.
Following the rollout in Leeds last year, this initiative also involved the citizens submitting their own recordings of the track the robots will play upon the delivery to the customers, spanning 30 seconds, for up to a month.
This promo is running until April 30th. Uber Eats will unveil the winning track and its composer this May.
The winning compose shall bring home a cash prize of almost $4,000 and, get this, a year’s supply of Uber Eats credit.
Those eligible to take part are anybody in the United Kingdom, including choirs, schools, and social clubs, but you must be over 18 years old, like the drinking age.
“We’ve already proven that robots are a key part of the future of efficient, high-tech delivery,” stated Merve Basci, the general manager of Uber Eats UK. “Now, we want to see if they can hold a tune. This moment is about more than just innovation; it’s about bringing a bit of unexpected joy to our customers’ doorsteps. Whether it’s a power ballad or a catchy hit, we’re letting the nation compose the soundtrack to their next takeaway.”
Delivery robots are tools that deliver Uber Eats orders to people that comes without human intervention. They are autonomous or semi-autonomous wheeled machines that transport food, packages, and groceries over short distances, known as “last-mile” delivery.
They make use of artificial intelligence, cameras, sensors, and GPS technologies to navigate sidewalks, enhance delivery efficiency, and reduce costs.
Earlier, Ridesharing Forum talked about how Uber Eats has partnered anew with robotics provider Starship Technologies to deliver meals around the western European country by robots. The areas will focus on two cities, Sheffield and Leeds.
Under this partnership, Uber Eats will start delivering food by robots with the world’s first rollout in cooperation with Starship, which is a renowned AI-run robotics specialist.
Starship is a company that specializes in revolutionizing “last-mile” delivery by using fleets of self-driving robots to deliver groceries, food, and packages locally. Deliveries managed by Starship are well-established, with over nine million deliveries completed across various nations.
"Our robots have been a much-loved part of daily life for communities across the UK since 2018: picking up shopping, dropping off essentials, there when people need them. Cutting out the short car trips that add up, our robots have already saved over 500,000 kg of emissions across Europe. We’re proud to bring that everyday convenience to 50,000 people in Sheffield, making robot deliveries just another normal part of the day,” Ahti Heinla, the CEO and the co-founder at Starship Technologies, meanwhile, stated.
