Cinco de Mayo is fun, but it can also be treacherous. Prior to Mother’s Day this May 10th, the world is bound to celebrate Cinco de Mayo 2026.
This celebration, which means “Fifth of May,” pertains to a holiday commemorating the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. In the USA, it is a celebration of Mexican culture, heritage, and resilience.
Cinco de Mayo is a festivity that often involves partying, drinking – tequila, mostly – dancing, and music, whenever this is celebrated in key cities across the globe. The modern Cinco de Mayo celebrations, that is.
This is why an issue that authorities face is bringing revelers home safe, considering they’ve been into some booze and partying.
Nevada’s Zero Fatalities Program teamed up with Lyft to encourage safe celebrations through offering discounted rides across Las Vegas and Reno, destinations where several Cinco de Mayo parties are happening, even perhaps more than the parties in New York City and Chicago.
This program offers $5 discounts on rides to help community members get to and from their destinations without driving under the influence.
“One decision can change everything. So be sure to plan ahead,” a representative from Zero Fatalities Program chatted with Ridesharing Forum. “Cinco de Mayo is a time to celebrate, but it’s also a time to make smart choices. Whether it’s using a rideshare, designating a sober driver or planning another way home, we all share the responsibility of keeping our roads safe.”
It works this way. From 12 p.m. on May 5th through 4 a.m. on May 6th, riders can redeem their $5 off one Lyft trip using the coupon code SAFERIDECINCO. This offer is available to 300 riders in total, limited to only one ride per ride, while supplies last. You can either redeem this through the Lyft app, or when you visit this website.
Nevada’s Zero Fatalities Program is responsible for eliminating fatalities on the roadways of this state. Their goal is on their branding itself, to make fatalities on the road zero.
“Some people may think zero is an impossible goal, but when it comes to your family and friends, what other number would be acceptable? We’re aiming for zero because everyone matters,” the program stated in their press release. “The road to zero targets key behaviors like buckling up, being pedestrian and motorcycle safe, eliminating impaired driving, focusing on the road, and stopping on red.”
Lyft is a ride-hailing company connecting passengers with nearby drivers through a mobile app. Passengers request rides, see fares, track drivers, and pay digitally. Meanwhile, drivers accept trips, navigate using GPS, and earn per ride. Lyft offers options like shared rides, luxury cars, and bikes or scooters in select cities globally.
