Following reports and updates that popular grocery shopping app Instacart is going to be acquired by DoorDash and Uber, this plan has come to its fruition, as ridesharing media exclusively announced that yes, an acquisition is happening. Here’s the scoop!
From plans…
In a previous report here on Ridesharingforum.com titled “Instacart Might Soon Be Eaten By DoorDash, Uber,” ridesharing media were caught off-guard upon hearing that Instacart might soon be owned by DoorDash and Uber Eats.
Instacart is eyeing a possible sale, and it is making sure this happens as it has reportedly already held preliminary talks with potential buyers, and the buyers are giants, DoorDash and Uber. That’s according to insiders in the business.
A business analyst stated, "Instacart risks getting squeezed between retailers building their own digital channels and bigger platforms that can bundle grocery with other services, giving consumers more reasons to keep coming back. For Instacart, a deal could provide the resources and reach to compete more effectively than it could on its own.”
… to implementation!
The talks may not have taken years, but DoorDash is officially purchasing rival Instacart through a deal amounting to $17 million, or $17 billion, rather, as food delivery conflicts heat-up.
The deal was announced Friday, marking an end for Instacart as an independent company. Instacart gained more interests in 2023, and benefitted from the time when people were huge fans of online deliveries, but it has admitted it has struggled to keep its momentum against bigger competitors like Uber, Amazon, and Walmart. Hence, the sale.
In a press release, DoorDash stated this deal “will offer grocers and retailers of every size DoorDash’s delivery network and Instacart’s grocery and fulfillment technology.”
“Grocery is one of the hardest things to get right online. Someone has to pick a ripe avocado, find a substitute you’d choose yourself, and get the ice cream to you before it melts,” Tony Xu, the co-founder and the CEO of DoorDash told the RSF team.
The merging of Instacart and DoorDash would create a bigger company that positions itself in a better spot, considering competition against rivals.
For instance, Amazon continues to expand its same-day grocery service, which now totals 2,300 branches, while Walmart’s latest, most interesting selling proposition is offering 30-minute delivery in select places. Meanwhile, Uber has expanded its offerings, recently signing a deal with Costco.
So many big plans ahead!
Xu also added how Instacart “has spent years learning to do that well for grocers, while DoorDash has built a delivery network and technology that local stores rely on everyday. Together, we could give stores of every size more of those tools and unlock the potential of grocery delivery.”
