The news that grocery orders on DoorDash are overtaking restaurant orders has been going on for quite a while now, and DoorDash has been making the effort to push its grocery orders, as Ridesharing Forum has followed. Now, they are tasting their own medicine.
Grocery orders overtaking restaurant orders are already on the horizon, DoorDash chief executive officer Tony Xu has confirmed, but he doesn’t know when exactly that will happen, Supermarket News reported.
It’s also because of the efforts of DoorDash, the app calling for more order accuracy, affordable options, and an easier basket-building experience.
Xu told Ridesharing Forum during DoorDash’s Q1 earnings call last week, “If you truly want to marry the best possible selection, which is every store inside your neighborhood, with the best possible quality, which means you get exactly the item you ordered without any substitutions or changes… I think you do have to work the fulfillment problem, which is where Dasher or DashMart Fulfillment Services comes in.”
In Ridesharing Forum’s previous report titled “DoorDash, The Next Big Thing In Online Grocery Delivery?,” the team found out that it has been working to push grocery deliveries to the top.
In that report, four grocery partners, namely Chicago’s Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets, Wisconsin’s Festival Foods, Woodman’s Food Markets – the latter also in Northern Illinois, and Ohio’s Marc’s – were added to DoorDash’s partners and catalog.
But then, again, DoorDash isn’t alone in promoting grocery deliveries, as Uber Eats also has its efforts.
Recently, DoorDash is reportedly creating an inventory management and fulfillment setup with all grocers and retail partners involved.
Xu stated, “And if we can do that, you can actually unlock what is truly a magical experience where it’s more similar to restaurant delivery.”
But, what prevents DoorDash from seeing this trend happening now? Well, the CEO stated among the bigger challenges is charging a protocol grocers have used for decades to run their supply chains and stores.
He further said that several things should be figured out, such as technologies, people processes, and the interaction of business models.
“We really want to make sure we nail the experience before we scale it,” Xu said.
Last week, more grocery delivery partnerships were added to its network, aside from those stated above, including eCommerce specialist FreshDirect.
Then, apart from FreshDirect, which has its biz in the Big Apple, the newest team-ups in the USA include over 200 stores operated by Brookshire Grocery in Texas and neighboring states, 140 Harps Food Stores locations in the Southeast and the Midwest, and 12 Market of Choice supermarkets in Oregon. Market of Choice is the Beaver State’s largest family-owned, independent grocery chain.
DoorDash is the world’s number one food delivery app that connects customers, restaurants, and drivers through convenient delivery services, enabling fast food ordering, grocery shopping, and local commerce.
