Uber Eats Australia and New Zealand got a brand-new advertising campaign, and it talks about the bad manners that go with the dropping of deals everytime. It’s also star-studded, as it features Australian Football League commentator Matt “Richo” Richardson, Kiwi sports legend Ian Smith, and former Australian rules football player Adam Goodes. Here’s the scoop.
Do you also swear when you hear your favorite item on the online shopping app, or your favorite food from a delivery app is selling for such a low price? This Uber Eats advertisement tackles this.
In a short and sweet ad spot, there’s a sports commentator, as usual, doing his job discussing the on-going game until his mobile sounded a notification, revealing what appears to be a $10 deal. He’s caught off-guard in the middle of commentating, and suddenly uttered a swear on-air! Only, the swear was covered with the word, “Ding Dong.”
His listeners and viewers heard the swear, and there was an awkward moment, even the person beside him in the commentary studio looked at him in question. Then, in another frame, a viewer from what appears to be a bar and restaurant, also uttered a swear, in reaction to the commentator’s swearing. It is funny.
According to Holly Dover, the marketing manager of Uber Eats Australia and New Zealand, “The best sporting moments spark an immediate reaction. Ding Dong Deals tap into that same sense of excitement, delivering unexpected value that’s worthy of a reaction of its own.”
Richardson is a former professional Australian rules footballer and current media personality who represented Richmond in the AFL. In March over a decade ago, he became a member of the All-Australian selection committee of the AFL.
Meanwhile, Smith is a legendary New Zealand cricketer and broadcaster, celebrated for his tenacity in his 12-year international career as a wicketkeeper-batter for the Black Caps and as the iconic “Voice of Cricket,” famous for his dramatic commentary during the World Cup 2019.
Lastly, there’s Goodes, an Australian rules football player who was among the game’s leading scorers. He was also a former Australian of the Year.
“Like the deals, this campaign was made to be [Ding-Dong] attention-grabbing. Hopefully nobody watches it while standing near a hot mic,” the creative team behind the Uber Eats Australia and New Zealand advertisement told RSF.
