When you can’t make your Uber Eats delivery guy wink at you with his charm, maybe your delivery robot can.
These Uber Eats delivery robots are autonomous, AI-run sidewalk machines designed to move around and transport food orders from local restaurants directly to consumers.
They navigate urban environments, cross streets, and keep your meals secure until you unlock the cargo compartment using the Uber Eats app. Yes, you’ll also be picking up food, but from a robot, and not a human being. Some of these Uber Eats delivery robots are run by Avride, the company that also runs other delivery robots from other apps.
Avride is an autonomous vehicle company developing and operating self-driving cars and six-wheeled delivery robots, primarily known for providing automated food deliveries through food delivery apps like Uber Eats and Grubhub.
Avride works by autonomously operating on city sidewalks to distribute food orders to a consumer’s address. But first, customers need to place their orders via the food delivery app.
The restaurant then places the food into the robot’s heated compartment, then locks its door. As the robot travels, it uses a combination of cameras, LiDar or light detection and ranging, as well as ultrasonic sensors to build a 3D map of its surroundings.
This lets its safely navigate sidewalks, avoid pedestrians, follow traffic lights, and use crosswalks at desirable speeds.
Once the robot reaches its destination, the customer receives a notification on their smartphone, which they use to unlock the compartment and retrieve their food.
In a circulating video online, an Avride Uber Eats delivery robot is seen winking at passersby and pedestrians as it plies the road. The video is shared all over ridesharing media.
It is captioned, “See an Uber Eats Avride delivery robot wink at pedestrians in Philadelphia.”
To make it fun, Avride created these delivery robots to have eyes to suggest that they can “see” the road. Technology is making it possible for these digital eyes to wink at pedestrians.
It makes the entire delivery as light, fun, and easy as possible.
