Uber, Trial Lawyers Spar Over The Auto Insurance Premiums By New Yorkers

Here’s another case of ridesharing apps like Uber getting into conflict with the law. A recent New York Times story says that Uber and trial laywers are sparring over the New Yorkers’ auto insurance premium.

Since the access to the entire report is limited, the Ridesharing Forum team did some research into what this is all about.

Governor Kathy Hochul is spearheading the initiative, saying that she has this goal of addressing the high auto insurance rates in New York, but it seems that Uber and the deep-pocketed interest groups are not agreeing with her proposals.

Hochul is the 57th governor of New York. She started her career in public service on her local Town Board, before serving as Erie County Clerk and as a Member of Congress for New York’s 26th Congressional District.

Here are some of her revolutionary ideas:

  • The crackdown on multi-car staged accidents or criminal enterprises
  • Allowing drivers to recover economic damages only if the injured driver isn’t at fault
  • Narrowing the definition of serious injury

But, seriously, the government meddling in the business affairs of Uber? Not quite good.

So far, Uber has its own insurance premiums, which is maybe why this is the level of Uber’s disagreement with the government.

“Whether you are logged on or have accepted a rideshare¹ or delivery trip, Uber’s insurance meets – or exceeds – the required coverage,” Uber noted on its official website. “If you’ve been in an accident, [Uber also has solutions for you].”

Furthermore, the world’s number one ridesharing app maintains this commercial insurance on behalf of you, its passengers.

The coverage depends on factors like who was at fault, whether you were offline, online, along the way, or on-trip, and your personal insurance policy.

Uber offers coverage when you’re offline, when you’re online and available for a trip, and when you’re en route or on a trip, with details here.

New York is among the most in-demand markets for the Uber app and the Uber rides, according to the official website as well.

What are your thoughts? Uber is a technology company and mobile app that connects passengers with drivers for on-demand rides, food and drinks delivery, and courier services. Operating worldwide and internationally, it provides a convenient alternative to traditional taxis by allowing users to request, track, and pay for rides through their gadgets.
