Uber To Start Enforcing Social Security Codes This Year, Drivers Scamming Passengers?

Uber may be enjoying their record-breaking stock jump over the past days, but the ridesharing app has also been experiencing some bad news. Ridesharing Forum has more.

Uber drivers want your money?

According to a recent report on the Internet, there is a number of Uber drivers trying to scam their passengers out of their money, and the trick: via personal phone calls.

Those drivers are allegedly calling their passengers, saying they must verify their accounts, but the end goal is to steal their money. The calls are, of course, believable, plus credible, for they are from Uber drivers.

Once the “scammers” have obtained your phone numbers, emails, and, get this, your verification codes, they will use them to log into your account and make it to your financial accounts as well. This is how they could get your money if those allegations are correct.

The victims may also be in the wrong, for why wouldn’t they check their accounts first? The report is saying they are falling prey since fraudsters are “convincingly impersonating Uber’s employees.” There are times they may reach out to you via the app itself. Could it be via the live chat feature? That’s even worse.

The ridesharing company already looking into the matter

Uber has been contacted to share their official statements regarding this matter. They are already on top of stuff, ensuring that passengers may still keep reserving their rides without hitches.

“Uber will never call, text, or email you to request your password, verification code, or banking details,” they pointed out on their official site. “Be cautious of anybody contacting you for this information.”

The company also emphasized that it discovered scammers using fraudulent domains that may appear to be officially from the company to deceive users into assuming they really come from the ridesharing app.

The ridesharing app recommended that you completely ignore calls, perhaps chats, that look like they’re trying to squeeze out details from your end. There is no such thing as these companies asking for your financial information, your verification codes, even. Likewise, report those details to Uber right away.

Uber India could soon be implementing social security codes

Uber’s Indian division is taking into consideration implementing social security codes for drivers by this end of the year, 2025, thanks to the national government, The Hindu reported.

The Indian newspaper spoke with the regional general manager of Uber in Asia-Pacific, Dominic Taylor, saying how the proposal is on its way to being enacted, especially with the end of the year as their target.

Apart from being confident it will happen in the target timeframe, the Uber India general manager further said there are funds to support this move. The benefits will also be admirable for the passengers.

“If the code is in place, [the social security] of the workers at Uber, mostly drivers, will be interoperable, which means they can benefit even if they go to Rapido or Ola,” Taylor told the media on this matter.
