As you may well know, there is a proposed takeover of Delivery Hero by Uber in a few months time. While this planned acquisition is surely going to change the business aspect and dealings of the two companies, human resources generally won’t change a lot.
This is since the Delivery Hero co-founder Niklas Östberg will remain in his position of the chief executive officer, the platform announced, reversing a leadership transition plan that the Germany-based food delivery company set out last May.
Based on his LinkedIn profile, the 46-year-old Östberg previously worked as the co-founder of OnlinePizza.se, the project manager of Oliver Wyman in Switzerland, and held internship roles at Merrill Lynch in New York, among others.
This pending takeover of Uber for Delivery Hero is offering a shift, but not the people ops. Östberg was previously and originally scheduled to step down by March 31st, but his contract has been extended until April 2029.
“With the Uber and SSW transactions underway, we are delighted to have Niklas continue leading the company through the next phase,” supervisory board chair Kristin Skogen Lund was stating.
According to Östberg, the time since the takeover announcement was made clear, this has given him enough space to focus on operations.
He told the RSF team, “Our Everyday App strategy is working, and growth and profitability are accelerating. I’m currently more energized than ever to continue leading the company into this next phase.”
It was in July when Uber agreed to acquire, take over, or buy Delivery Hero in a landmark deal amounting to $14.8 billion in equity. Uber has also offered a certain amount per share in cash, a premium of roughly 127 percent over Delivery Hero’s unaffected three-month volume-weighted average share price before May 8th. These combined businesses posted pro-forma gross bookings of $236 billion in 2025.
Furthermore, as part of a much broader transaction, a leading investment firm in New York agreed to separately buy Delivery Hero’s operations in 14 markets for around $1.6 billion. Delivery Hero operates in around 65 countries across four continents.
Earlier this month, the management and supervisory boards of Delivery Hero endorsed the takeover bid, urging shareholders to accept it, saying the offer was “in the best interest of the company, its shareholders, employees, and other stakeholders.”
In around less than a year, in the second half of 2027, the deal is expected to be closed.
Uber had been constructing its ownership stake in Delivery Hero prior to the acquisition discussions, becoming its biggest shareholder before the announcement.
