Even if hailing your Uber ride is convenient, bringing you to your destination without having to smell like outdoor smoke, especially perfect when attending events with no need to change to the dress code, there are times when you’d rather hail a motorcycle because it is fast when there’s too much traffic on the road.
True enough, but if you’re an avid Uber fan, you’ll like the news that Uber also lets you hail a motorbike whenever you want to. No need to transfer from one app to the other. This service, the Uber Moto, has just recently been launched in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Johannesburg is one of the busiest cities in South Africa if not the African continent and the world. Traffic congestion is one of the biggest problems the city faces. It must be because it is also the most populous city in South Africa.
But with limitations
Earlier this month, the platform announced the launch of Uber Moto in the city, expected to bring more convenience for motorists who need to get to their workplace at a faster time, or to their events quicker.
However, there are limitations. Uber Moto is currently only available in the western part of Johannesburg.
The trips are generally costing about $1, which is relatively cheap. Plus, first-time customers can even enjoy a 35 percent discount for three trips. But, this is limited to the first 50,000 people only. This promo is until March 31st, 2025.
What passengers think
The reactions of people regarding this development are mixed. On Facebook, they are saying things like, “This one will be best and less traffic jam plus most male rider will use this as going to work and after work,” “If it comes to SA, I will definitely use it in times when I am running late. It will be handy, no traffic issues,” “This is nice to drop me at the shops and I come back in the car with bags,” and “Am not sure about this kind of transport.”
Uber Moto shares its attractive branding to motorists. On its official page, it describes itself as a service that offers doorstep pickup and rides that can let you skip the crowd and ride in comfort, zip through traffic, and navigate narrow lanes.
”Go get it with Uber Moto,” the page invited. “Looking for an affordable and quick ride? Conveniently request a ride with Uber Moto from your doorstep at just the tap of a button.”
Uber Moto is also offering the following benefits: find a ride in minutes without the need to wait for a bus or train, reach your destination faster, and spend less.
However, passengers are advised to take extra caution as it is less safe to ride on a motorcycle.
Other Uber news
Meanwhile, in other Uber news, the ridesharing platform is currently facing a Federal Trade Commission investigation, alongside Lyft, over alleged driver compensation suppresion.
According to media reports, the probe is looking into the companies adjusting their apps so some drivers can find it difficult to find passengers, thereby limiting their earning potential. Both Uber and Lyft are denying the allegations.
A spokesperson for Uber said, “We are confident that our actions here were reasonable and appropriate under New York City rules.”
