Uber Kicks-Off Self-Driving Robotaxi Trial In Manchester

Sooner or later, Manchester roads will soon see robotaxis plying the streets as Uber has officially kicked-off the self-driving robotaxi trial in this destination.

The attractions are beautiful, the cars are beautiful. Uber has started the trial of these autonomous cars, the first series of rollouts across Great Britain.

The first robotaxis are now in operation using the technologies of Uber’s affiliate firms, Pony and Verne, which Ridesharingforum.com spotlighted here previously, since they launched autonomous taxis in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.

The kick-off and the tests involve Uber mapping the streets with a safety driver behind the wheel first, and no passengers to ensure everything will run smoothly after this pilot testing.

Limited passenger services began last month in London. The safety driver in front is being supplied by Wayve under Transport for London’s licensing rules for private-hire cars.

However, the next stages of this test are still reportedly unclear, especially since there is a loud opposition from Uber drivers, their unions, and some businesses, arguing that the jobs of human drivers here will be lost, so help has been requested to address these issues.

Okay, and parties are mediating to solve these problems. They are saying that there is “considerable uncertainty about many of the claimed benefits of autonomous passenger vehicles,” and that there are fears over the impact on public transport and congestion, as well as safeguarding and accessibility for disabled passengers. Do you agree, or not?

Right now, everything is in the testing phase. There are no official go-signal as to whether to launch these passenger services fully in Manchester, but the developments are clear.

The Transport for Greater Manchester said it wanted the city’s taxis to be the safest in Great Britain.

“New technologies play an increasingly important role in the growth of our city region,” they told RSF. “But they need to be introduced responsibly, safely, and with real thought about what it means for our residents. Although no applications have been made to operate driverless taxis in the Greater Manchester, we’re aware of potential interest from companies to do so. Safety will always be our top priority, and we will need strong assurances that no vehicles will operate on our roads that pose any risk to residents.”

Uber is thrilled to take this very first step to making this technology accessible to people in the western European country.

Of course, the partner companies are also excited. Online, Verne stated it has started deploying these autonomous cars in Manchester, while Pony stated the plans and the testing are underway.

One thing is vivid. Uber will be providing robotaxi trips in as many as 15 cities across the globe by the end of this year, 2026, and the certain destinations so far for these robotaxis are the USA and the Middle East.
