Swedish Content Creator, Tourist In India Saying His Uber Driver Tried To Scam Him

This Swedish content creator toured India, claimed to have been scammed by an Uber driver there, and now, he’s viral on social media. Read on for the scoop.

Scammed?!

A Swedish content creator who toured India took to social media to share how an Uber driver allegedly attempted to scam him.

In his Instagram post, the content creator, who has the username @iamjonasax, revealed how an Uber driver allegedly tried to scam him.

In his post, he described booking an Uber Intercity ride. He said the ride began smoothly until the driver suddenly stopped in the middle of a busy road, claiming the car had broken down.

This situation has “urged” the driver to demand around $58 in case for the repairs. The content creator refused to pay, so the driver abandoned him on the roadside under scorching 45 degrees Celsius heat, as he narrated.

In the caption of the post, he stated:

“Manish really wanted those rupees.

Called @uber_india, they sorted me out with not one, not two, but three replacement rides, all canceled on me (I assume as I was on the highway). Got home all well no thanks to Uber, with another story to tell (emojis)

[ uber india, intercity uber scam, uber highway incident, uber left me, taxi scam india, uber cash demand, stranded by uber, highway scam, delhi uber issue, uber india problem, real uber story, travel warning india, uber complaint, taxi fraud india, intercity travel gone wrong ]”

His video was a selfie showing him left on the side of the road.

Comments

The comments section went ablaze with insights from people, but mostly, of course on the side of Uber.

“No action will ever be taken by Uber. I had raised several complaints against their drivers for misbehaviour and misconduct, but they are ready with their bot response and post that no action against that driver. Sometimes I feel the driver and @uber_india are partnering to trouble the customers only,” wrote one user.

Another, meanwhile, agreed that Uber rides in India are “scams.”

@uber_india intercity rides are scam. The drivers accept the ride and then call to pay extra… telling Uber is showing one side fare only, I want double of the fare shown in the app. Happened on Friday in Jodhpur with us,” wrote another commenter.

Another said it is “utterly unacceptable.”

“This is utterly disgusting and unacceptable how @uber and @uber_india treat their customers. I too face these kinds of issues during the peak hours most of these cancel the ride after asking the destination,” they wrote.

Uber India’s defense

Uber India has issued an informal apology by commenting on the post of the Swedish content creator.

The ridesharing app wrote, "Hi Jonas, we apologise for this frustrating experience. Our specialised team has investigated and taken appropriate action.”

Sometimes, it’s really not the company that is to blame but the drivers who do not know how to represent those firms well.
