In a Spotify episode of the podcast “The Impulso Podcast,” which you can still be able to stream now, the hosts talked about the future of DoorDash, including the ultimate question as to whether one of the world’s biggest delivery platforms will enter Southeast Asia.
Will DoorDash enter SEA?
Right now, DoorDash is present in more than 30 countries around the world with the most sizable portions of its reach being in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. But, small to no reach at all in Southeast Asia.
So, these podcasters wanted to know if DoorDash can dominate the region, too.
“So basically we, held an event where we explained I think some of the details and dynamics and of course the macro trends of food delivery sector in Southeast Asia in 2023 and as well as what we are expecting in 2024,” one of the podcasters in the show stated.
There were several questions and answers discussed, but the very first was whether DoorDash can enter Southeast Asia as well.
“We know that currently Deliveroo only operates in Singapore, in this region, and they have a pretty small market share of about [nine percent],” the other podcaster responded. “… Yeah, compared to Grab and foodpanda, right? And we also mentioned during our event that DoorDash has had a really good 2023. We saw their share price more than double, their revenue grew pretty significantly, and they are continuing to increase its market share in the U.S.”
As of this time of writing, DoorDash is, of course, not part of the statistics on the most used food delivery apps in Asia. There’s Meituan Waimai in China, foodpanda in Hong Kong, GrabFood in Indonesia, Uber Eats Japan in Japan, Baemin in South Korea, and more.
The podcast also mentioned Tony Hsu, a DoorDash official, saying that the company would expand out of the United States and “out of restaurants,” making the hosts think if this also means entering the Southeast Asian market.
But, they were quick to conclude, saying that this is “unlikely.”
“Would they expanded to Southeast Asia? I think, I think it’s quite unlikely because they already have had a test of Southeast Asia and they decided to retreat to the high end market. Which we know that outside Singapore probably you have a limited market in this segment in other countries,” the podcast stated. “So, so I think it’s quite unlikely that they are going to expand into this region.”
Other DoorDash news
Meanwhile, in other DoorDash news, can you even believe DoorDash has sued Uber? This was because of alleged anti-competitive practices. But with several Uber acquisitions globally, this is shocking.
But, the lawsuit is only covering the state of California.
“DoorDash’s underhanded tactics have cost Uber millions of dollars in revenue and unlawfully restricted its ability to grow Uber Direct, the Uber Eats platform for first-party delivery,” Uber pointed out in the lawsuit.
To respond to the case, DoorDash told the media, “Uber’s case has no merit. Their claims are unfounded and based on their inability to offer merchants, consumers or couriers a quality alternative.”
