This story will make you want to listen to your favorite country song and then maybe shed a few tears. Seeds of Hope is a charitable organization in North Carolina that cultivates an inclusive community through food security, education, and outreach.
On Monday, Seeds of Hope took the initiative to partner with delivery technology to bring much-needed food to the less fortunate in America’s countryside. The food distributed included peppers, rice, carrots, bananas, tomatoes, and just about anything that people need for a good, satisfying meal. The program is admirable, but the organization knows there is still more work to do.
“We are looking at once a month right now. We are not real sure about what our schedule is going to look like, but if we can bring this to our community at least once a month, we feel like we are making a difference,” stated Jim Howard, the executive director of Seeds of Hope Wilson.
It took a village to make this happen. It was a very systematic process involving volunteers who repackaged the items on tables at the Seeds of Hope House.
“Seeds of Hope wouldn’t be anything without its volunteers,” Howard added. “We are so privileged to have this community of people. Many hands make light work.”
Even the volunteers are expressing their delight about their participation. They say that these food shipments are important since the neighborhood has several old people who can benefit from the food, too. Not just the less fortunate.
Meanwhile, Seeds of Hope garden manager Lorena Bravo shared with the media how planning for this delivery project has been going on since last year, so the enthusiasm is really there.
“I know a lot of Spanish families who don’t have a lot to eat, so we try to bring help,” Bravo emphasized, adding how there were red rice, black beans, and normal rice that a person could make a whole dinner. There were even cactus with eggs, interestingly.
“We have got some chilis. We can make some rajas, some chili relleno. That’s a lot of food,” she noted.
Seeds of Hope has been working on this project for 11 years now.
“We’re glad that we have been able to have a sustaining presence in this community,” Howard added. “Eleven years is a long time, and we are looking for many more to come.”
This project by Seeds of Hope is in partnership with the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina and the Food Bank of North Carolina.
Who knows? Maybe Uber, Lyft, or Grubhub will become partners one day!
