School Paper News: Ohio State’s Undergraduate Student Council Accelerates Lyft Ride Smart Discount

There’s the popular adage that says the youth are the hope of the nation. True enough, the undergraduate student council of Ohio State is making the effort to promote and expand the Lyft Ride Smart Discount program.

This program is by Lyft, but it’s focused on universities, offering discounted or free rides for students, usually within a campus service area.

Through this initiative, safety is promoted by preventing drinking and driving and walking alone at night, with details such as discounts and ride limits varying by institution.

According to the Student Wellness Data from Ohio State University, drunkenness among students is rampant.

“About half of the undergraduate respondents reported risky drinking behaviors, such as binge drinking or using substances to manage emotional issues,” the university noted.

With this program by Lyft, students, through their university email or app invites, may use coupons for benefits, such as $10 off for each ride or a set number of free rides within a given month, but eligibilities apply.

Now, the Undergraduate Student Government unanimously passed two resolutions, collectively calling for the university body to better assist the students with regard to transportation, and increase the discounts through the program as they attend the first General Assembly of this brand-new semester.

The Taylor Tower at the university is currently under repair after a big flood last Saturday.

Leading the resolution is a third year student in Public Policy and Analysis and Political Science, Christopher Cade.

“The resolution calls on the university to master lease apartments, as they did with Lawrence Tower,” Cade told Ridesharing Forum.

The plan is to give the choice to the students whether they wish to stay in the campus, or avail of the off-campus residence. If they choose the latter, they’d be given a $1,000 stipend to accommodate the relocation expenses. Of course, there are pros and cons to each.

Where does the Lyft program settle in? According to The Lantern, the official publication of the school, the discount program of Lyft would be increased up to $6.50 to help those students displaced from the campus due to the tower’s temporary shutdown.

The resolution was passed with no dissenting opinions or opposition, hence unanimous.
