Nike Air? No, It’s DoorDash Air

DoorDash officially now has its in-house drone delivery program! This is the scoop.

How DoorDash’s drone food delivery is taking off

Several delivery apps are doing it, and this time, DoorDash is taking part in the bandwagon. It has drone deliveries before, but this is the first-time this is turning in-house.

Drone deliveries are more preferred due to their speed and convenience. There’s no need to beat road traffic.

Recently, the world’s number one food delivery app launched its in-house drone delivery platform after securing a certification from the United States Federal Aviation Administration to operate commercial drone deliveries across the USA.

This move is a milestone for the food delivery company’s push into autonomous delivery as it looks into reducing dependence upon human couriers, as well as expand its logistics network.

The aim of DoorDash Air is to make food deliveries faster and more efficient than what’s traditional.

These are autonomous drones, and advanced drones that will transport food orders directly from restaurants to consumers using GPS-guided autonomous flight technologies.

It features lightning-fast delivery technology that flies above traffic to allow people receive meals much quicker, especially during rush hour and peak demand.

It also features live order tracking, wherein customers can monitor drone flights in real-time and receive accurate estimated delivery updates via the app.

Each drone features smart navigation, obstacle avoidance, and automated flight controls to ensure the safest operations.

Businesses will benefit from these features, as well as from these eco-friendly operations. These drones will further expand in the future, DoorDash stated.

Key information

This program was developed by DoorDash Labs, the robotics and autonomy unit of the food delivery app, and will be integrated into its delivery app.

The company told RSF it is building its own aircraft and and broader drone infrastructure but did not provide a timeline for commercial deployment.

This launch adds DoorDash to the growing list of platforms that offer drone deliveries, such as Amazon, Wing, and Zipline.

DoorDash added it will continue to work with its current drone-delivery partners, such as Wing and Flytrex, even if it is creating its in-house drone system.

DoorDash already operates a multi-modal delivery network that combines human couriers, its Dot sidewalk robots and autonomous delivery partners, with drones serving as an additional fulfillment option.

DoorDash is a food delivery app that connects customers with local restaurants and retailers through a delivery platform. Consumers place orders using the app or website, participating businesses prepare them, and independent Dashers deliver purchases to the selected address. Customers can track deliveries in real time, while businesses expand reach and Dashers earn income by completing deliveries. DoorDash also has grocery deliveries and those from other categories.
