When you want to earn a stable income despite little, you may turn to signing up as a DoorDash driver or driving for the platform as a side job. What drivers like about the work is that they get support from the government, such as what’s happening in British Columbia, Canada.
The British Columbia government has granted drivers a new pay structure that is enabling them to get more satisfied with their jobs and continue moving forward.
New pay structure for drivers
Recently, the Canadian government changed the regulations for how food delivery and ride-hailing drivers at companies like DoorDash, Uber, and Skip the Dishes are paid.
The changes took effect late last year with the most glaring change being that the drivers won’t be paid a full minimum wage for whole shifts, but only when they are on the move and not waiting for orders to be prepared.
Instead, they have been paid a higher minimum wage of around $15 for working on delivery orders, which is rated by the hour, versus the former rate of around $12 per hour. There are separate rates for the gig workers.
Aside from those, there are also compensation benefits from WorkSafeBC, a workers’ compensation company.
Survey says drivers are inspired to continue moving forward
A survey conducted by Pollara Strategic Insights revealed that seven in 10 DoorDash drivers in Canada said the work under the new pay structure “enhances their sense of financial security.”
Almost all dashers strongly agree that protecting their ability to choose when, where, and how they work is crucial. Regardless of the pay amount, some are willing to quit working at DoorDash if they lose this freedom.
Official statistics from DoorDash revealed the businesses partnered with the platform will lose revenue if they lose DoorDash.
"The survey data shows that all types of dashers value being able to earn money on their own terms, be they students or older dashers with a full-time job,” stated Dan Arnold, the chief strategy officer at Pollara Strategic Insights.
But, DoorDash needs to compensate
So, to pay all their drivers right, DoorDash imposed new fees on the expenses of the customers.
“These new regulations are significantly increasing our operating costs,” DoorDash said in a statement last October. “All delivery orders placed through DoorDash in B.C. will include a new regulatory response fee ranging from $0.99 for restaurant delivery orders and up to $2.99 for all other delivery orders.”
