Oh, for a time, these female soccer players looked so beautiful with their soccer shirts bearing the name of DoorDash, but the team management decided to replace the world’s number one food delivery app as their shirt sponsor.
Shirt sponsors are almost a requirement in sports team, as it is an ex-deal between a business and the team wherein audiences would see the business logos throughout the matches.
The National Women’s Soccer League is a leading first-division professional soccer league for women in the USA. Established in 2012, it is widely considered among the highest levels of women’s club soccer internationally, featuring top global and American national team talent.
Among its teams is Angel City FC, representing Los Angeles in California. Then, there’s also the following:
- Bay FC (San Francisco Bay Area, California)
- Boston Legacy FC (Boston, Massachusetts)
- Chicago Stars FC (Chicago, Illinois)
- Denver Summit FC (Denver, Colorado)
- Gotham FC (Harrison, New Jersey)
- Houston Dash (Houston, Texas)
- Kansas City Current (Kansas City, Missouri)
- North Carolina Courage (Cary, North Carolina)
- Orlando Pride (Orlando, Florida)
- Portland Thorns FC (Portland, Oregon)
- Racing Louisville FC (Louisville, Kentucky)
- San Diego Wave FC (San Diego, California)
- Seattle Reign FC (Seattle, Washington)
- Utah Royals FC (Salt Lake City, Utah)
- Washington Spirit (Washington, District of Columbia)
Contract changes from this team have made them hire The Team, which will be in-charge of looking for the replacement of DoorDash as their official shirt sponsor.
But, it’s not because they simply don’t want DoorDash anymore, but their five-year contract with Angel City FC has already ended. It is fully expiring by the end of the 2026 season.
Throughout those years, DoorDash has sat front and center since the very first game of the club.
This newest or brand-new undertaking builds a bespoke commercial story around the massive fanbase of this football team, its cultural influence, its Los Angeles legacy, and its global reach. The agency will also handle the naming rights for the team’s Thousand Oaks performance center.
So, it’s a fresh road for them. ACFC senior director of corporate partnerships Alex Mallen stated that this undertaking is about “its long-standing commitment to women’s sport and its proven track record of delivering transformative commercial partnerships,” that they hope that the second label can give justice to the things DoorDash has achieved when they were with the soccer team.
Chris Foy, the managing director and the executive deputy of rights sales for North America at The Team said, “The front of kit sponsorship represents one of the most visible and impactful platforms in global sport today,” and is an opportunity to align with a club that “embodies ambition, purpose, and cultural relevance.”
Angel City FC, led by Willow Bay and The Walt Disney Company’s Bob Iger, is currently valued at $380 million. It is re-investing 10 percent of the revenue it gets from sponsorships into a community cause. Like the character of Paul Rudd in the movie “Power Ballad”!
