In Layman’s terms, a nosedive a quick, sudden fall with the front or nose pointing downward, either literally, and could be applicable for aircraft movements, temperatures, and stocks, among others, and this is how financial experts describe the closing of Lyft’s stock this week – a nosedive. Here’s the scoop.
3-day stocks performance
Trading is still on-going, but as it closes soon, the nosedive is noticeable. It is currently trading at over $16, down over a whopping six-percent.
On November 4th, Wednesday, Lyft shares jumped and closed at $18.74, which is up 12.42 percent on volume more than double average, as investors traded side-by-side with Uber, plus strong bookings. So, this day, things were amazing.
However, the next day, November 5th, Thursday, stocks at Lyft closed down 4.80 percent, reporting a surprise quarter-three GAAP loss and a revenue miss following this close.
Happenings with the $117.9 million legal, tax and regulatory reserve charge, including the California driver classification settlement, were being blamed for this result. Financial institutions did their necessary adjustments.
Tonight, November 6th, Friday, it’s highly unlikely that stocks will close high or above expectations for Lyft, but who knows there might be a miracle, right?
Lyft shares are sliding as targets are missed, losses are prominent, and there are regulatory reserve changes along the way.
Also, management is warning that future reserve changes could again hit GAAP results, though analysts are mixed.
Why nosediving?
And, Lyft isn’t denying these reports. Their press release is stating that the reserve adjustments and settlements are directly reducing quarterly revenue by around $69 million, contributing to a net loss of $9.7 million.
Quarterly revenue increased 8.1 percent year-over-year to $1.82 billion. However, that figure fell short of Wall Street analysts’ expectations of $1.92 billion, while the GAAP loss of $0.03 per share missed consensus estimates of a $0.20 profit. Hence, the nosedive.
“Lyft’s shares are quite volatile and have had 19 moves greater than five-percent over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business,” financial analysts are saying.
