Lyft has successfully set up a brand-new multi-sensor safety standard for autonomous rides, and the ridesharing app has, at last, arrived in El Dorado. RSF has more!
Multi-sensor safety standard
Lyft recognizes the several rides that happen on the platform, and the risk to accidents that can occur.
“Every day, millions of rides happen on the Lyft platform. These rides hold your most precious cargo – family, friends, and colleagues – which is why we are committed to being the safest way to get around,” Lyft told RSF.
According to the ridesharing app’s data, there are around 40,000 deaths and 2.4 million injuries in the USA each year on roads. Car crashes remain the leading cause of death for teenagers and young adults, and are among the leading causes of death across people.
Even riding autonomous vehicles has this risk.
“But not all AV technology is created equal. Sensors are the eyes and ears of a self-driving system, and providers have taken sharply divergent approaches,” Lyft added.
The ridesharing app, considering these statistics, came to this conclusion: that cars must have a multi-sensor approach before they get signed up on the Lyft platform.
This week, Lyft updated its AV Partner Safety Evaluation Framework to reflect this mantra and aim, requiring any autonomous car operating to implement a multi-model redundant perception system coupled with sensor diversity.
Some AV systems are to use multiple, overlapping sensor types, which include cameras, radar, and LiDar, so that if one fails or is temporarily impaired, the autonomous car can go on operating very safely.
Also, Lyft clarified that this policy applies only to fully-driverless cars on the platform, but not to driver-assistance features that human drivers use. Similarly, if you are driving on Lyft and using a driver-assist technology in your own car, this policy does not affect you in whichever form.
“The next time you get in a vehicle on the Lyft network, you can rest assured our focus on safety continues, no matter what the vehicle or mode of transportation,” said Lyft. This time, share your inputs by opening your account here on the forum.
Welcome to El Dorado, Lyft!
Also again, to be clear, this does not refer to the mythical South American city of gold of the similar name, which has connections with Colombia, whose king would cover himself in gold dust and dive into Lake Guatavita as an offering.
Rather, it pertains to, El Dorado, Arkansas! But you can imagine if Lyft is in the mythical city of El Dorado, right? Anyway!
El Dorado in Arkansas is also an attractive destination for tourists, where places like the South Arkansas Arboretum, Healthworks Fitness Center, Murphy Arts District, Everybody’s Antiques, as well as Gabe’s Cave Comics, Cards, & Collectibles lie.
Well today, it will be easier to explore around these locations since Lyft is officially serving El Dorado, that’s right.
So, that makes it official. You can chat with the driving community here by launching your account here on RSF. You may visit Lyft for more of these information, and to learn more!
