Lyft has made it to Europe! But there’s one problem: passengers are asking if the use of the app will be that simply, or complicated.
Good news! It’s okay to use the same Lyft app in North America when you book Lyft rides in Europe!
This is a big help, especially for travelers from North America to Europe. They never needed to download the app once more, which happens when you use Uber in other countries.
Ridesharingforum.com previously reported Lyft’s plans in Europe, and the North American app for Lyft has begun rolling out in European cities, allowing travelers from USA and Canada to order rides using the same app, same account, and same payment preferences.
According to reports, the rollout has started in Barcelona in Spain, Hamburg in Germany, London in Great Britain, Rome in Italy, Paris in France, Berlin in Germany, Athens in Green, and Warsaw in Poland. More cities will be added this month. These in cities include those in Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, England, Scotland, Ireland, Austria, France, and Germany.
Sid Patil, the chief rideshare and marketplace officer at Lyft, was stating, “Millions of riders across North America trust Lyft to get them where they’re going every day. Now that same app works the moment they land in Europe. No need to download anything new.”
This strategy builds upon Lyft’s purchase of Freenow, a European mobility platform from Mercedes-Benz Mobility, completed in 2025. This partnership is giving Lyft an established presence across various countries in Europe, and its first-ever big expansion beyond North America.
“Every market we connect makes the network stronger for riders and drivers,” Patil added. “This expansion takes us from being your neighborhood rideshare app to a global, multi-mobility platform.”
This deal is also supported by a brand-new back-end framework that connects the Lyft app to third-party mobility marketplaces. Instead of asking passengers of switching between various apps, this would let Lyft customers access driver supply from connected systems while keeping their account intact and usable.
What happens to free now then? It will continue operating its own app for passengers in Europe, while its drivers will gain additional sources of demand from North American visitors reserving rides through Lyft.
This approach is a revolutionary change from Lyft’s traditional ridesharing model in North America to a model that connects various services on mobility through a common passenger-facing platform. Its wider operations then now span rideshare, taxis, private hire vehicles, chauffeur services, car sharing, bikes, and scooters.
Lyft is a ridesharing app that makes it super-easy for passengers to look for rides without needing to go through the hassles of finding a cab.
