Lyft Aiming To Launch Hundreds Of Robotaxis In North America, Europe From 2027

This, in partnership with autonomous car developer, Tensor Auto.

Lyft has collaborated with Tensor Auto to deploy a fleet – not just one, not just two, not just 10, not just 50, but hundreds – of robotaxis in Europe and North America beginning this 2027.

“Today, we’re announcing a planned strategic partnership with Tensor that will revolutionize how consumers access and monetize autonomous driving technology,” Lyft tweeted.

They added that through this collaboration, Tensor Auto’s Robocar, which is powered by NVIDIA, will become the world’s first-ever personally-owned AV to become “Lyft-ready” directly from the manufacturing facilities. Lyft explained that this means future owners could start earning as soon as they start driving.

“This is our next big step in building a hybrid AV future,” Lyft further noted.

Tensor Auto is a company taking charge of manufacturing and building AI-powered, fully autonomous vehicles designed for personal ownership, known as Tensor Robocars. Its flagship product catalog features a high sensor count for AI perception, a foldable steering wheel, and an embedded AI agent capable of conversational interaction.

Though the official start of the launch is in 2027, reports stated that the first deliveries will be in late 2026, with over 100 sensors, including cameras, lidars, and radars, powered by NVIDIA already on board at that time.

Furthermore, these cars will come from the manufacturer with Lyft’s platform installed, allowing owners to raise money on the rideshare network in markets where fourth-level autonomous technologies are available. Lyft has reserved hundreds of robocars via its affiliates for its own fleet operations, although these are subject to regulatory approvals.

This is not the first time this kind of partnership is happening. Uber has more than a dozen partners agreements internationally with autonomous car developers. Uber is offering driverless rides to passengers in Phoenix in Arizona, Atlanta in Georgia, and Austin in Texas. With WeRide, these kinds of rides are available in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates as well.

Also, last month, Lyft and May Mobility kicked off the offering of autonomous rides assisted by safety drivers in Georgia, and more partnerships are expected next year, including in Tennessee, with Alphabet’s Waymo.

This undertaking is Lyft’s way to compete with those efforts of Uber. Financial terms have not been disclosed yet, and the companies have not yet identified the metropolitan areas they will initially target.
