This year, the Automated People Mover shuttle will open in Los Angeles’ star airport.
Also pertained to as the APM, it is a driverless shuttle that connects all eight terminals of Los Angeles International Airport to dedicated transit and car-rental centers, alongside the city’s Metro network within the airport’s precinct.
Aside from Changi Airport in Singapore, big airports like those in Hong Kong and Seoul also run with shuttles bringing passengers across, and are also driverless.
However, to cover the expenses, travelers would have to face a 140 percent increase in the airport access fee charged for taxis and ridesharing vehicles.
This is to reportedly begin running in the second half of 2026, which is quite delayed already as the timetable started in 2023.
Once operating, the rubber-wheeled trains will arrive every two minutes during peak periods, with an end-to-end journey time of around 10 minutes on a 3.6-kilometer elevated track.
The specific price increases are the current $5 access fee for taxis, rideshare cars, and other commercial vehicles, to as much as $12 once the shuttle ride is opened.
The increased fees would serve to both reduce congestion and fund airport upgrades, with estimates that the new fees could generate up to $100 million each year.
