In this news round-up, you will witness how food delivery drivers in Wichita, Kansas, are happy to brave the winter spell just to meet the demand, and see how Vietnam has made it to the top of the most successful food delivery markets in Southeast Asia.
Braving the winter storm
Because a winter storm is currently crippling the Wichita area, school and office closures have prompted people to just stay at home. So, there is a need for food deliveries.
This is why, even though most residents of Wichita are at home, food delivery drivers are busier than ever, braving the winter storm.
An assistant manager at a Pizza Hut near Harry and Webb Road said business has been hectic so far.
“Especially on days that [are] super snow and school’s out, everybody wants pizza, they don’t wanna cook, and they don’t wanna go out. It hasn’t stopped,” Callie Jantz-Peeks told the media.
However, this wasn’t ever a reason for drivers to get frustrated. In fact, they are happy with what they are doing, even if roads are not the easiest to navigate.
“All of my customers that I’ve been delivering to have been really understanding as far as the timeframes for everything. They’ve also been very generous,” stated pizza delivery driver Chris Keith.
He also said that the key is to drive defensively to avoid accidents and deliver what the residents need quickly.
“You’ve just got to be slow, you’re definitely not going the speed limit. You know, it’s about 50 percent maybe,” Keith added.
“We’ve been liking it, it keeps us on our toes. Just stay warm,” Jantz-Peeks stated.
Vietnam is the most successful food delivery market in SEA
Meanwhile, in terms of the most successful food delivery market in Southeast Asia, ridesharing media revealed that the winner is Vietnam.
The country’s food delivery market reported reached around a whopping $1.8 billion in gross merchandise value in 2024, marking a 26 percent increase from the previous year.
According to the Monday report of Momentum Works’ Food Delivery Platforms, Vietnam has incurred the highest growth rate in Southeast Asia.
The credit goes to Grab Vietnam and ShopeeFood Vietnam, which formed the duopoly, as well as the rapid expansion driven by a broader customer base, an extended service area, and the capability of these platforms to leverage their business ecosystems.
Also, Southeast Asia’s food delivery market soared by 13 percent year-on-year in 2024, led by Vietnam, then Indonesia at 26 and 18 percent year-on-year, respectively.
With regards to which platforms contributed to this growth, they are Grab, owning a 54 percent market share, followed by ShopeeFood and Gojek, becoming the third-largest player in the region.
