The ICE is probably among the most, if not the most controversial, authority figures nowadays. It stands for the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a big federal law enforcement agency under the United States Department of Homeland Security. They are tasked to oversee the world – no, kidding – the United States, so the country is away from illegal immigrants.
But, when an ICE officer shoots a DoorDash driver, that’s when the story changes. Here’s the scoop.
Remember the Venezuelan guy who got shot by the ICE immigration agents in Texas? His deportation is being blocked by a United States judge, temporarily.
However, the 28-year-old DoorDash driver, Wílber Rafael Garcés Pérez, is being held at a detention center with a bullet in his back. A shot guy and being held in a detention center? Hmmm.
Now, Judge Orlando Garcia, who is a Clinton appointee, has scheduled a hearing for the driver to appear in court in-person next week.
ICE officials are stating that an “illegal alien” had been the subject of a targeted vehicle stop, but pushed back against suggestions he had been given insufficient medical care.
This incident comes months after another ICE officer fatally shot a man in Houston.
Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, the talented lawyer of Garcés Pérez, has filed a federal lawsuit for a temporary restraining order to prevent his deportation. Of course, he has to attend the hearing.
“For now, we have secured a temporary block on his deportation while his case moves forward,” Lincoln-Goldfinch wrote on social. “This is an important step, but our work is not over. Wilber still needs appropriate medical care, and we will continue fighting to protect his rights.”
Their work is definitely not yet over, and Lincoln-Goldfinch believes that his health is still the priority.
She told the RSF team the gunshot fractured his clavicle, and that he is suffering from “significant swelling and pain.” Furthermore, the cause of his difficulty moving has not yet been determined, worst-case scenario.
Another bad-timing, a representative for the United States Attorney’s Office in Texas declined to comment on the case.
The ICE did, however.
They are urging the general public to avoid listening to “false narratives” and to people spreading “un-truthfulnes” regarding the matter.
“Contrary to their claims, this person is an illegal alien who has no legal status to be here and has been given some of the best medical care he’s ever received in his life,” stated Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. "No amount of brand destruction, smears, misleading covers, false narratives, and other hacking and destruction attempts will slow down ICE from doing its job by removing dangerous illegal aliens from our communities and making America safe again.”
