A first for the Ridesharing Forum site, telling you and reporting about ICE. For context, ICE, which has been all over the news recently, stands for the USA Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
It is a federal law enforcement agency under the United States Department of Homeland Security.
ICE is a security stimulus policy of the Trump Administration. The mission of ICE encompasses both public safety and national security. However, its responsibilities are distinct from those of the average local police department in the USA.
ICE agents have the power to stop, detain, and arrest people they think are in the country illegally, the BBC explained.
For the firm believer and staunch advocate of everything United States, the presence of ICE shouldn’t be questioned.
However, for the critics of Trump’s ICE, it is an issue. According to CNN correspondent Aaron Blake, “Whether any of it amounts to actual, provable profiling, we don’t know. But it’s become abundantly clear that agents are being put under lots of pressure to apprehend undocumented immigrants, and there is relatively little caution involved. That can lead to shortcuts and lots of [issues].”
Google’s generative AI is also saying ICE uses excessive force, leading to fatalities, as well as implements “lawless” actions, does collateral damage, and the like.
Such as what happened to two Amazon Flex workers last February 2nd that the media only got to report recently.
That day, ICE agents arrested Amazon Flex workers in Hazel Park, Michigan. The two workers were Venezuelans Edwin Gutierrez and Angel Perez, captured by ICE agents after vehemently entering Amazon delivery facilities in Hazel Park for work.
Both Venezuelans were asylum seekers holding Temporary Protected Status. According to ICE critics, this sends a chilling message to thousands of Amazon Flex workers in the country who migrated to work.
Right now, the Venezuelans are detained at the North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, the largest ICE detention site in the Midwest. Their partners have already issued public pleas for their release, and they should be, since they are innocent, just seeking a better future for their families. They are also the main household workers bringing home income for food, shelter, clothing, and more.
This certain raid by ICE has provoked widespread outrage, with their co-Amazon Flex workers saying it is wrong for ICE to go after the men, and that ICE’s presence in the area is “intimidating” to everyone who works there.
But ICE won’t be stopped to implement what they think is just, orderly, and right. They have stepped up their presence around Michigan businesses, workplaces, schools, and even daycare centers.
Amazon Flex is a gig delivery program where independent drivers use their cars to deliver Amazon packages, groceries, or orders. Drivers choose time blocks, earn per delivery block, and get paid weekly, most of the time.
