Hero For Drivers? This Minnesota Senator Is Threatening To Block Budget Votes Over Lyft’s Protections

In this planet where governments are making lambasting ridesharing apps their pastime, some politicians are the heroes. Take, for instance, Senator Omar Fateh from Minnesota, who told the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party political party that he would block key budget bills unless both chambers passed his rideshare driver protection legislation, an email obtained by Ridesharing Forum revealed.

The exclusive email is shedding light on the tactics the senator has to achieve a legislative accomplishment that could bring change to the lives of drivers in his home state, and stand as a role model for other states to follow.

Why it matters + flashback

Fateh’s position matters since the agenda of the party against his plans is going side-by-side with the horrific full control of the Democrats over the state capitol.

His legislation could end the years of political drama and debate at the Capitol and the Minneapolis city hall over minimum pay rates adjustments and worker protections for Lyft drivers, which even caused the platform to leave serving the state once and for all.

Fateh has continuously pushed for this, but his previous proposal was vetoed by Governor Tim Walz, saying that while he supported Fateh’s advocacy in every way, the version that reached his desk “not the right bill to achieve these goals." Interesting.

Veto after veto

The senator’s city-level rideshare pay measures were also vetoed by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who the former is challenging this November. Though the City Council was able to override that veto last year, those rates were still pre-empted by the state law.

Fateh told the media that it was not what he meant, clarifying his statements further.

“The use of leverage is a routine part of effective negotiation and legislating,” Fateh reportedly noted. “And in this case, it worked, and thousands of drivers throughout the state are benefiting from better pay and worker protections.”
