There’s this adage that says, “It’s better late than never,” and GrabFood Malaysia is a testament to the fact that there’s no such thing as getting out of the picture.
The GrabFood 5-Star Awards has returned in Malaysia, though it’s still counted as the “2024 edition.”
Honoring the most loved restaurants
GrabFood 5-Star Awards is an annual ceremony that honors the most loved restaurants in this Southeast Asian country as voted by you or avid foodies.
“The GrabFood 5-Star Awards is our way of celebrating the incredible achievements of our merchant partners, especially local SMEs while reaffirming our commitment to helping them grow through innovative tools, valuable insights, and creating demand,” Grab Malaysia’s director of commercial and deliveries, Jiong Jian Tan, stated.
This year, there are a whopping 148 restaurants that made it to the final bout, even more than the number of participants at last year’s Miss Universe competition. There are also almost 20,000 votes cast to determine the winners.
Some of the categories were Budget-Friendly Favourites, Rising Stars, and Best of the Best. Read on for the winners in these categories.
The winners
Grill Fish restaurant bagged the Best of the Best title. Grill Fish is a popular restaurant in the key cities of the country serving primarily seafood, but they also have other offerings. It’s not as popular and big as the other restaurants, but customers love dining here.
Meanwhile, the Rising Star category was won by none other than Nasi Ayam Gepuk Original Korn Kitchen. It isn’t a posh diner, but a humble hawker stall that serves various styles of Nasi Ayam or rice and chicken dish, such as Gepuk Gabung, Gepuk Gangster, and more.
The category of Budget-Friendly Favourites went to Aisy John, Aunty Susie’s Nasi Lemak, and Zeon Food Station.
Another major award was given, the Crowd’s Favourite Healthy Asian Food, won by Nengbakso, a restaurant in Malaysia that serves Indonesian cuisine.
For tourism
Not only was this awarding show a way for more people to get to know GrabFood Malaysia, but also Malaysian tourism as a whole. Or, rather, gastro-tourism or food tourism.
“Tourism Malaysia is proud to collaborate with Grab Malaysia to position Malaysia as a global gastronomic hub. Initiatives such as the GrabFood 5-Star Awards not only showcase our culinary diversity but also empower and enable local entrepreneurs to reach greater heights,” stated Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Tourism Malaysia’s director.
