Gen Z People Saying ‘No’ To Driving? Even The CEO Of Uber Doesn’t Allow Son To Get Driver’s License

The CEO of Uber himself, Dara Khosrowshahi, is leading all the dads out there who are not willing to allow their children to get a driver’s license. The CEO of Uber, imagine this.

In a fascinating report on Fortune entitled “Uber CEO says rideshare ‘freed up’ his son from having to get a driver’s license – and he’s one of many Gen Zers who aren’t willing to drive,” it indicated that the Gen Z’s are turning away from getting a driver’s license since they can simply hail ridesharing rides, with his son of his number one fan.

This might sound like he just promoted Uber to the dear readers, but this trend is real. Minus the accidents on the road and the potential of drunk driving, according to Investopedia, the costs of car upkeep is at around $12,000 per year, while owning will slash $52,000 more or less from your pocket.

“The various costs associated with car ownership include purchase, maintenance, insurance, and fuel. Understanding these costs helps you make financially informed decisions. Few of us know exactly how much it really costs to own a car, so factor in these expenses, or else you might underestimate how expensive owning a car can be,” Investopedia correspondent Lisa Smith stated.

Is it smart to instead hail rideshare rides everytime? Considering those costs, well, probably.

Owning cars is a big thing among Gen Zs, and millennials, too. They do not care about adding to the road traffic and congestion, but they care more about flaunting the cars to their family, and saying, “I invested in something.”

The Gen Zs, otherwise known as Generation Z, pertaining to themselves as Zoomers, are those born between 1997 to 2012, succeeding the millennials. This generation is touted as “the first true digital natives,” – since huge investments in the Internet never started until 1998, according to certain sources – growing up completely immersed in the Internet, smartphones, and socials. But, they’re more afraid to express themselves.

This is why the Uber CEO, Khosrowshahi, is talking on their behalf, represented by his son.

In his interview with Yahoo! News, he told the outlet, “I’m still trying to get my son to get his driver’s license. It drives me crazy. I don’t know about you, but did you get a license the minute you could drive? It was just such a thing. It was a goal in life. It represented freedom.”

He also cited statistics, saying that a specific percentage of 16- and 18-year-olds getting licenses has significantly dropped, according to his personal take.

“If you look at the percentage of 16- or 18-year-olds who are getting their license, that percentage is coming down significantly,” he further noted. “I think it used to be two-thirds, but now it’s probably in the 50 percent range.”

He is saying, his son is more willing to play “Fortnite” than to actually think of his own car like thinking of his girlfriend because he sleeps at night. For more ridesharing news, keep it locked right here on Ridesharing Forum!
