Food Delivery News Round-Up: DoorDash USA, New Zealand On A Roll + Dianping Starts Year Right

Food delivery apps in major countries worldwide are on a roll. Let’s start this news rundown with the successes of DoorDash USA and New Zealand, followed by China’s Dianping, which impresses entrepreneurs with record-breaking quarter-one earnings.

DoorDash New Zealand

DoorDash is never Delivery Hero per se, that’s a different animal, but DoorDash New Zealand has launched a campaign that turns its delivery drivers into local heroes. Watch the hilarious ad here, crafted in collaboration with a renowned creative agency in the country.

Of course, as heroes, they must show up fast, friendly, and ready to save the day when hunger strikes. The hero is named Dash, a cape-wearing character, like Batman! – who may not have superpowers, though, except that he arrives on time.

Charming and always on time, Dash introduces a distinctive Kiwi flavor to the very idea of food delivery.

“Dash is the embodiment of everything DoorDash represents — fast, reliable, and always there when you need him,” DoorDash New Zealand’s general manager, Bradley Thomas, stated.

What people also love about this campaign is its re-recorded, remixed version of Queen’s cult anthem, “Flash Gordon,” now transformed into “Dash!”

"Best of all, he adds a good dose of relatability and Kiwi humour to every situation he is summoned to. We’re so excited to launch this campaign and know New Zealanders are going to love Dash,” Thomas further blurted.

DoorDash USA

Meanwhile, in DoorDash USA, the platform’s small strides are being turned, not to superheroes, but to a considerable impact.

They recently announced that the parent company of Market 32 is joining DoorDash. The company is Northeast Grocery, which also manages Price Chopper and Tops Friendly Markets, providing on-demand delivery at almost 260 stores in the northeast.

It was in the 1930s when Market 32 opened, hence its name. Via this partnership, customers can order more than 150,000 items, including groceries, household essentials, and prepared meals.

“The partnership is about meeting evolving customer expectations while staying true to our local roots,” John Persons, the CEO of Northeast Grocery, told the media. “It’s an exciting next step for our ecommerce growth and an opportunity to deepen our relationship with shoppers while reaching even more customers across Northeast Grocery’s six-state footprint.”

China’s Dianping

Dianping – a Chinese application where you can find local restaurants, hotels, tours, and shops – also posts record-high earnings for the first quarter of this year.

They reported a massive increase in revenue and profit, showcasing the strongest growth in its core local commerce and new initiatives segments. Their revenue rose by a whopping 18 percent year-over-year to almost 87 Chinese yuan, with operating profits doubling to 10.6 billion Chinese yuan.

The company credits this to enhanced operational efficiency and strategic investments in artificial intelligence and other technologies.
