DoorDash Says Farewell To Voice-Ordering Product Pilot For Restaurants

It’s not everytime always good news for your favorite food delivery platforms, such as DoorDash. You wouldn’t know and expect it, but even with the emergence of several technological innovations helping these platforms scale up their operations, they needed to say goodbye to some of those relevant features, such as voice ordering.

Farewells

When managing orders becomes complicated for restaurants, voice ordering helps a lot. Also pertained to as voice-activated ordering or voice commerce, this feature is a way of interacting with a business – a restaurant in this regard – using spoken commands instead of manual typing or browsing, such as chatting with customer support.

This feature leverages voice recognition technologies and AI to understand and process customers’ orders, making ordering faster, more convenient, and hands-free. This also helps iron out issues encountered along the ordering process.

In 2023, DoorDash introduced this feature to its systems. However, just this week, the food delivery app announced it has stopped operating this feature, even though the company has enhanced its collaborations with AI.

Launched in August 2023, the feature was designed to provide assistance to restaurants in call management during hectic periods, allowing other team members to focus on in-store responsibilities.

DoorDash has confirmed that the pilot feature ended last April, with a spokesperson saying, “We have a high bar for continued investment and remain guided by what customers and data tell us. We scale or wind down initiatives based on many factors, including product-market fit, customer demand, and others.”

Why did this happen?

People did not see this coming because it is like shutting down Facebook all of a sudden.

However, this decision was due to Donatos Pizza, which encountered issues and sought a new vendor due to DoorDash’s move to “sunset” its automated ordering features.

It came in as surprise since last March of the same year, DoorDash invested in expanding its AI capabilities, even involving its top-ranking officials.

As for those involved in the AI project are concerned, they are willing to remain with DoorDash.

“We have developed proprietary technology and learnings from this pilot, and we’re excited to deploy it through a number of other customer use cases,” they stated.

DoorDash is your food and drink delivery application that connects you with various restaurants and stores, enabling you to order food and drinks for delivery as needed. It’s also a technology company that administers on-demand delivery services, empowering people to order what they like anytime, anywhere, confidently.

The company is expanding. Recently, DoorDash has diversified its primary delivery operations to welcome more enterprise services for restaurant operations. Among its recent moves was the acquisition of hospitality technology company SevenRooms, which seeks to provide software to restaurant groups. They also recently introduced a table-booking feature via the app.
