DoorDash Driver’s Account Deactivated After Using AI-Generated Image To Fake Delivery

Artificial intelligence is advantageous if used in the right ways. Apparently, on the end of this DoorDash driver, that’s when the lines are blurred.

Resident of Austin

DoorDash has completely deactivated the account of one of their drivers who tricked a customer into letting them believe the delivery was real when in fact it was fake, as the proof of delivery via images was reportedly generated through AI.

The victim was Byrne Hobart, a resident of Austin, who shared his experience on social in December 29th.

Hobart is saying that their order was marked “Delivered” on the DoorDash official app, together with an image that looks exactly like the front entrance or porch of their home. However, he could also recall that no food was delivered and no delivery staff appeared.

“Amazing. DoorDash driver accepted the drive, immediately marked it as delivered, and submitted an AI-generated image of a DoorDash order (left) at our front door (right),” he wrote in the caption with the images of the front porch.

Fortunately, DoorDash issued them a refund, dispatched a second driver, and had his food delivered, after he contacted support. But the time delay and the inconvenience are still noticeable.

“DoorDash, of course, promptly dispatched a replacement at no cost. Enjoy your Poke, Matthew! And Janet, I hope the temptations of a medium-trust society do not overwhelm you. All fixed,” he wrote. Kudos, DoorDash!

His post on social media sparked discussions. A netizen claimed they’ve experienced a similar issue, and guess what? It’s the same driver account name! Though they’re two different individuals, Ridesharing Forum has confirmed.

This raises alarming issues over the security of the customers. For, what if this is part of a syndicate?

Other commenters are questioning the authenticity of his post, for what if he’s part of the larger choreography?

Hobart clarified, “Yes, it did. You shouldn’t trust me all that much, unless you’re already familiar with me. Lots of people make up stories online for clout. This one does, however, happen to be true. I don’t think there’s any good proof if it that wouldn’t be trivial to fake, so I won’t be offended if you don’t think so…”

Real driver’s account compromised?

DoorDash often requires riders to take images of their deliveries, not primarily as proof for the customers, but for them to have something to show the company.

It is being speculated now that the driver’s account may have been compromised, and it wasn’t that driver owning the account that uploaded the fake images, but his account was only used.

DoorDash has issued a statement regarding this incident, saying that they are promptly investigating the incident, and to keep things safer, the driver’s account was already deactivated.

They added that they maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards fraud and that they rely on both automated systems and human reviews to identify and stop platform misuse. For more food delivery news, keep browsing this Ridesharing Forum website.
