Ever remember that kid in your pre-school or kindergarten who would choose to eat junk food, otherwise pertained to as chips, during recess, instead of the relatively healthier biscuits, or packed meals?
Now, it is easier for these types of kids to get the junk food they really like, since DoorDash and Grubhub officially admitted they are already delivering chips to schools across the USA, though high schools, and their reason? To compete in the increasingly-competitive industry.
Junk food during school hours
Chips look good during Netflix moments, but during school hours? It might be unhealthy, but these food deliveries go on. They bring not only the usual meals and snacks, but also deliver junk food across campuses, researchers stated at the yearly meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.
Nearly one-quarter of teens say they use mobile food delivery services to bring them meals and snacks during school hours, researchers reported at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition.
“Today, a smartphone instantly brings a food outlet many miles away right to the school gate, fundamentally changing how our children access foods and beverages at school,” lead researcher Mika Matsuzaki told RSF. She works as an assistant professor of Human Nutrition at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, yes, the same name you heard during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
How healthy are they?
This sounds like a no-brainer, but even those junk food and chips got the Nutrition Facts label, with some brands saying they are rich in these vitamins, but let’s ask nutritionists.
While healthcare experts at the University College London say that these foods can benefit people, such as those aiming for weight loss, since they can be replacements for heavy meals, and you know those people low in sodium are obliged to include junk food or salty chips in their meals, the health nuisances of these chips are also rampant.
According to registered dietitian Karen Fajardo, it’s best to practice proper meal preparation, especially for the Gen Zs.
“Hola! Meal preparation is not only healthier, but also cheaper,” she told Ridesharingforum.com. “How much are the vegetables in the market, compared to those processed food? But, you have to make sure that you eat a balanced meal. There are carbohydrates on your plate, as well as those lean meat, and vegetables. The more colorful your plate is, the healthier.”
In the research, a whopping 60 percent reported ordering fast-food like pizza and burgers, while one-third ordered sodas and other sugary drinks.
Are health specialists agreeing on these deliveries for the sake of conquering business competition? They don’t.
“We can no longer look at school nutrition without looking at the mobile gadget in a student’s pocket,” Matsuzaki stated.
The researchers surveyed more than 1,000 13- to 17-year-olds in July through August 2025, using a national online polling platform.
“Interestingly, students themselves are divided on whether this should be allowed. Even those who support it openly worry about campus safety and classroom distractions,” added Matsuzaki. “It’s rare to see teenagers raise flags about their own digital habits, which signals to us that they recognize these platforms are a double-edged sword.”
