Summer’s on a roll, and for families, especially those with kids currently on break from school, it means travel, travel, and lots of travel. Chinese platform DiDi Chuxing is ensuring these travel surges are safe for you.
For some summer travelers, such as groups of friends, most of the time, it’s all about taking hitch rides. But aren’t these rides unsafe? This is why DiDi Chuxing is here for you.
Xinhua recently reported DiDi Chuxing launching a new feature, “Safety Agent,” for its DiDi Express and DiDi Hitch services in China.
DiDi Express offers efficient shared rides across China’s major cities, matching passengers along similar routes at lower fares. Meanwhile, DiDi Hitch is a social carpool feature, relaunched with strict ID checks, in‑app safety assistants, time limits, and facial recognition.
Not even Uber has thought of these safety features.
This initiative is leveraging AI alongside human oversight and a bit intervention to enhance the safety of their passengers during rides.
The system will employ artificial intelligence algorithms to track trips in real-time, spotting unusual behavior or potential safety risks. If a concern arises, the system alerts a human safety specialist who will intervene when necessary.
“As summer travel picks up, Didi urges users to avoid private arrangements, use in-app communication tools or masked calls to protect personal information, and confirm driver and vehicle details before boarding,” the correspondents stated in their report.
These new features are expected to combat crimes while passengers ply the road on these ridesharing vehicles.
To give a background, this new safety feature follows DiDi’s years of documented safety issues across the ride-hailing industry worldwide, which has created pressure for technological solutions, such as AI.
Furthermore, alongside this feature, there will also be an Online Safety Officer, which is a reflection of China’s increasingly strict regulatory approach to ridesharing services, with safety being the particular focus, of course.
This groundbreaking shift from pre-ride verification and post-ride reporting to active monitoring during rides represents an unparalleled evolution in ridesharing safety approaches and steps.
Moreover, advanced identity verification using facial recognition and AI-driven monitoring systems has also been shown to increase users’ confidence and trust in ridesharing services across industries.
