Did DoorDash Make The Right Decision Introducing AI To The App?

Several tech giants have done it: There’s Gemini on Google, Copilot on Microsoft, and Meta AI on Facebook. Today, even DoorDash has joined the bandwagon.

DoorDash announced earlier that it has incorporated artificial intelligence into its app so restaurants can more easily “lure” customers with their menu options. Since when have customers been “baited” into ordering their cravings?

AI pertains to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines so they can perform tasks that usually require human thinking, such as understanding language, recognizing patterns, and making decisions. A prime example would be addressing customer concerns in automated replies.

What do people think about this brand-new move from DoorDash? Read on.

AI in online food ordering

At last. Artificial intelligence has made its way into online food ordering on DoorDash. AI-powered tools were made available on the app so merchants could optimize their menus better, enhancing customer experience and boosting sales.

“At DoorDash, we believe AI should make life easier for restaurants – not more complicated. It’s about using automation to enhance the guest experience while keeping the operator’s unique touch front and center,” stated Arpit Dhariwal, who is the Head of Product, Merchant Acquisition and Growth at DoorDash.

With the integration of AI, all these are now possible via the DoorDash app:

  • Creating enticing menu descriptions instantly without having to think of what to write. Professional, isn’t it?
  • Enhancing the photos of your food using AI. Food filter?
  • Automatic approval of photos for instant upload. No need to take the snaps yourself.
  • Photos will then be enhanced into “clean, professional menu photos,” thanks to AI

In other words, it’s like robots conversing with you when ordering via the app.

“At DoorDash, our goal is to help merchants at every step of their journey, whether that’s improving photo performance, automating the photo approval process to ease their workload, or improving the customer experience through detailed menu descriptions,” the platform told the media.

What people think

A marketing guy on LinkedIn, Vedant R., went ahead to share his thoughts about AI intervening with online food ordering. In his LinkedIn post earlier this year, while he stated AI has stupendous perks, there are alarming concerns, such as data privacy and algorithm bias.

“Automation may result in a loss of employment for delivery personnel. Retraining programs and concentrating on jobs that AI cannot duplicate are two potential solutions,” Vedant R. wrote.

DoorDash held a meeting last fall to discuss OpenAI for its upcoming operator agent. People asked, “What if the bots start ordering pizza for their virtual meetings?”

“These new AI-powered tools represent DoorDash’s ongoing commitment to making it easier for merchants to succeed and equipping them with the technology and resources they need,” DoorDash stated today. “For consumers, these enhancements not only create a more seamless and visually appealing ordering experience but also preserve the authenticity of each dish – helping customers make confident, informed choices while still seeing the food as it truly is.”
