Cleopatra, Meet Sushis! Grubhub Celebrating National Sushi Day

National Sushi Day, celebrated this year on June 18th, gives homage to maybe the number one food in Japan, sushis. This celebration encourages people around the globe to appreciate this iconic Japanese dish, learn about its preparation and cooking styles, and the various ways to indulge in this treat.

Grubhub, being a leading food delivery app, took to social and the real-world to celebrate this gastronomic occasion. This story has more.

Happy National Sushi Day: Sushi, history, cooking styles, so much more

Sushi is Japan. Japan is sushi. Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish made with vinegared rice paired with seafood, vegetables, eggs, and other ingredients, when needed.

As for the origins of sushi, it traces its history from over a thousand years to an Asian food preservation that evolved in Japan into the sushi you know today.

Sushi is not a one-size-fits-all. Whether it’s a Japanese buffet, or plating, the most famous types of sushis are nigiri, maki, sashimi-style presentations, temaki, and uramaki.

To prepare sushi involves cooking short-grain rice, seasoning it with rice vinegar – of the Japanese style for better taste – sugar, and salt, then combining it with carefully-selected fillings or toppings.

Some sushis may also feature raw fish, cooked seafood, or vegetables. The most common preparation styles include hand-formed, rolled, pressed, and molded sushi, highlighting freshness, balance, presentation, and flavor. Yum, yum, yum!

National Sushi Day 2026 was celebrated online and offline, either from as simple as hosting a sushi party at home, to taking part in events organized and conducted for the love of sushi.

Meanwhile, over on Grubhub, they took part in this momentous occasion by releasing two content on Facebook.

The first reads like this, “What better way to celebrate National Sushi Day than with a sushi picnic? Order from the best sushi spots in your city with no delivery and service fees on restaurant orders $50+ (heart emoji)”

Now, who wouldn’t be enticed by that! Grubhub has made sushi eligible for the No Grubhub Delivery or Service Fees on Restaurant Orders Over $50 perk, or the Eat-the-Fees perk.

It basically eliminates Grubhub’s standard delivery and service fees on eligible orders with a $50 and more sub-total.

Prior to that, Grubhub shared about Sushi Week, saying, “We’re making Sushi Week a thing (with no delivery AND service fees on your restaurant order of $50+) (emojis)”

To qualify for the coupon, your subtotal – or the items in your cart before offers or discounts – must be at least $50. The subtotal does not include taxes, government-mandated charges, optional fees like priority delivery, or tip.
