China’s Meituan Says ‘No’ To Fakes: They Roll Out Authenticity Seal For Premium Wine, Spirits Deliveries

Indeed. Meanwhile, this October, Hong Kong in China will once again celebrate another edition of its Wine and Dine Festival.

Dubbed the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival, this is a yearly celebration held in the world city over, what else? Food and wine, lots of them! It is officially organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, showcasing a wide range of culinary delights and wine selections from across the globe.

The food and wine tastings are paired with live music, cultural showcases, and interactive workshops. For this year, this will be held this October 23rd to 26th. So, if you are up for this event, you better book your flights to Hong Kong now.

“The Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival is an annual celebration of epicurean offerings at the end of October,” their official press release noted. “Taking place at the Central Harbourfront, it promises great wine and delectable treats from around the world, live performances, and a deliciously good time, all set against the dazzling Victoria Harbour!”

Wines, though mostly originating from Europe and the Americas, have a special place in the hearts of Hong Kongers. Several Chinese have the palate for the globe’s best-tasting wines.

So, one of the leading eCommerce and delivery platforms in China, Meituan, is banking on this opportunity to make sure that no fake wines will ever get to the homes or offices of their customers.

The tech giant’s dedicated alcohol platform, Waima Alcohol Delivery, has launched an authenticity seal – similar to the guarantees you get when shopping for jewelry at Lukfook – which promises that each bottle, from the process of warehouse sealing to doorstep delivery, is genuine, verified, and traceable.

This move is not to prove something, but has a practical reason, particularly when Chinese consumers previously patronized high-end spirits, only to find out that they are counterfeits at the end of the road.

“At the inbound stage, we have designed a strict ‘seal check’ process,” a warehouse officer for Meituan told Ridesharing Forum. “The receiver inspects the seal carefully, and if it’s broken, the delivery is immediately rejected.”

Aside from the genuine seals at all stages, Meituan will also take full responsibility for the unboxing and authenticity verification before the package enters storage. So, it’s like a two-step verification on your socials!

Furthermore, Meituan’s warehouses for the processing of the products along the delivery chain have installed 24/7 surveillance equipment in both central and front warehouses to safeguard against the substitution of genuine products. The videos are being monitored in real-time and stored in the long term.

“We conduct weekly inventory counts and random inspections across all liquor categories,” the warehouse worker further pointed out. “The results are cross-verified and documented for record-keeping.”

Plus, there are also specialized and sterile containers fitted with a one-time security lock bearing a unique code, just like your one-time passwords. This system is designed to avoid substitution during transportation and ensure the last mile is always secure.
