JD.com brands itself as the largest retailer in China. This member of the NASDAQ100 and a Fortune Global 500 company may focus on technology and services enterprise, as well as supply chain, but it also covers retail, technology as a whole, logistics, healthcare, industrial tech, property development, private label, insurance, worldwide business, and so much more. It’s quite encompassing.
Now, it has announced it is welcoming a new industry under its belt… food delivery in China.
Based on a report on Reuters, the company has started its recruitment of participating restaurants.
JD.com now has a food delivery service
JD.com publicized this bold move on its Weixin account, naming its new service for China’s food delivery industry JD Takeaway. Weixin is also referred to as WeChat, a Chinese instant messaging, social media, and mobile payment app that Tencent developed.
In its Weixin account, JD.com pointed out that those who join JD Takeaway before May 1st this year will benefit from commission-free services for the rest of the year. So, this is the perfect time to sign up on JD.com.
JD.com’s entry into the food delivery market in China is interesting as there is presently a duopoly going on, with market leaders Eleme of Alibaba and Meituan currently dominating the space.
Though it offers support for merchants, JD.com’s food delivery service will also foster healthier and more sustainable growth for the industry.
Ridesharing news outlets revealed the decision to invest in and venture into food delivery comes as JD.com thrives amidst competition in the dynamic eCommerce landscape of the East Asian country.
What it can offer
Aside from Alibaba Group and PDD Holdings, JD.com will also face competition against Douyin, so to make sure it wins, it has launched the discount campaign to keep its top position in the market amid an economic slowdown in the country and reduced consumer spending power.
What the company can offer to the food delivery industry in China is its own self-operated yet comprehensive logistics network, which it has developed through the years.
This infrastructure will enable and empower the company to provide same-day or next-day deliveries across most regions of the country just like what Southeast Asia’s Shopee and Amazon are offering.
