Car and Driver Requirements for Postmates, DoorDash, UberEats, Amazon Flex and Deliv

(Bick Bhangoo) #1

It seems that Uber started a new phase in transportation development, the online logistics service provided by private citizens AKA Rideshare. The new era of delivery has opened up quite some opportunities and what was once considered a second-rate form of income is now becoming the hottest job to have.

Ever since Uber went online, app developers with a business model realized that deliveries and global logistics could be manipulated by one natural resource, the private car owner. With so many natural resources ready for deployment, it was only a matter of time that this market niche became populated.

Delivering Food and delivering parcels is the next Uber-fest, where plenty of online apps are popping up all over the place. With companies such as Postmates, UberEats, DoorDash, Amazon Flex and Deliv., and more, it's time to review what is required for applying to these services.

Postmates

The requirements for Postmates are minimal, and they include ant operational mode of transport that can be used to deliver hot food and prepared meals on time. These include:

  • Applicant is 18 years or older
  • Have a vehicle or bicycle
  • Car, truck, motorcycle, or scooter
  • Own either an iPhone or Android smartphone
  • Valid US Driver's license
  • Insurance card with name on policy
  • A social security number (background check)
  • Pass the background and driving record check
  • Pass an orientation interview online or in person

There is no list of cities for bicycles, so you need to find out when applying if your city enables bicycle deliveries.

Posmates will demand a background check for the last seven years, so make sure you have no prior offenses or driving offenses. Checkr performs all the background checks.

DoorDash

This service is identical in requirements to Postmates. However DoorDash is only a food delivery service and works with restaurants delivering meals during all hours of the day, and all you need to have to apply are:

  • Applicant is 18 years or older
  • Have a vehicle or bicycle
  • Car, truck, motorcycle, or scooter
  • Own either an iPhone or Android smartphone
  • Valid US Driver's license
  • Insurance card with name on policy
  • A social security number (background check)
  • Pass the background and driving record check
  • Pass an orientation interview online or in person

DoorDash currently operates only in these cities:

Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis / St. Paul, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Orange County, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose / Silicon Valley, SF East Bay, Seattle / Bellevue, Toronto, Vancouver, and Washington, D.C.

The list of cities you can deliver on a bicycle is limited, but includes the following sites:

Toronto, Northern California, Raleigh-Durham, Phoenix, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Washington DC, Boston.

Doordash will demand a background check for the last seven years, so make sure you have no prior offenses or driving offenses. Checkr performs all the background checks.

UberEats

This is a part of the Uber empire, and as such demands, certain compliance since many UberX drivers also deliver for UberEats:

  • Driver insurance coverage on a State registered insurance card.
  • Applicants name must appear on the insurance card.
  • Applicant does not need to own the car.
  • No Vehicle inspection

In some cities, UberEats can only be driven by UberX drivers, so it is imperative that you check online in the Uber city site what the UberEats requirements are per city. In cities that it is not a requirement to be a UberX driver then Uber sets the car requirements to those of Postmates and Doordash. You can use any driving method so long as you have valid insurance.

UberEats will demand a background check for the last seven years, so make sure you have no prior offenses or driving offenses. Checkr performs all the background checks.

Amazon Flex

Amazon Flex is a parcel delivery service that hires car owners as independent contractors and then assigns them shifts of three to four hours. The drivers pick up their deliveries from a logistics center and deliver them according to the Flex app directions.

  • The vehicle must be either a minivan, pickup or 4 door sedan
  • Trucks and Minivans will provide extra income

Amazon Flex performs a background check that takes around two to five days to complete. Amazon Flex offers three delivery types: Prime Now, Amazon Restaurants, or AmazonFresh orders. Amazon restaurant requires you have insulated bags to make Restaurants deliveries. Amazon Fresh AmazonFresh deliveries are heavier than other deliveries, so they recommend using a hand truck, and Prime one deliveries are collected from a logistics center.

AmazonFlex allows drivers to have accompanying passengers during their work hours.

Deliv

Deliv is another same day delivery service provider that hires drivers as independent contractors. It's similar to many other delivery services and has taken the evolutionary step from old school reliance on FedEx and other such professional services by offering an alternative solution with local drivers.

To apply for a Deliv position, you must have:

  • A vehicle that is not older than 15 years
  • At least one year of driving experience
  • Applicant must be over 18 years old

Deliv only allows for bicycle or walk deliveries in New York City. It does require all applicants to pass a background check and a DMV check for their vehicle. Another interesting fact is that delivery routes are usually within a 15mile radius only.

Summary

All the above companies, apart from UberEats are minimum risk companies, this means that you do not deliver a passenger and do not need to have commercial or ride-share friendly insurance coverage.

UberEats is the only company that is part of a larger network, and most of the UberEats drivers come from UberX since it is an immediate match for them to deliveries during slow passenger periods.
