DoorDash couldn’t get enough of sports, and this time, they are back with American football. Super Bowl LX vibes? Here’s the scoop.
Brand-new campaign
DoorDash recently launched its newest college football campaign titled “Don’t Fan for Free,” and it features former American football player and ex-USC quarterback Reggie Bush, former New York Giants and FSU quarterback Jameis Winston, and American football coach Lane Kiffin.
The campaign is humorous, referencing the pre-NIL times, or that time in college sports before August 2021, when student-athletes were strictly banned from making money off their Name, Image, and Likeness, hence the term NIL. Imagine that!
It also references past controversies, such as the crab leg incident and the forfeiture of Bush’s Heisman, highlighting how athletes could do the NIL.
So, with this campaign, DoorDash aims to connect with fans, make that conversation relevant, and offer DoorDash Streaks with weekly deals and big, big prizes, including a Dodge Charger or $757,500 to a home, which is a wondrous nod to Bush’s history
This initiative also features a National Tailgate Tour at 11 universities, that’s right, offering game-day experiences, merchandise, and free Student DashPasses, so making fandom more fulfilling. It’s the Student DashPasses that’s the most interesting.
DoorDash’s Gina Igwe – working for the company’s Brand, Creative, and Consumer Marketing Department – told RSF, “[The idea started with NIL and how dramatically] it has changed the culture of college football in recent years. Reggie, Jameis and Lane were the perfect people to bring that idea to life because each has a distinct personality and very real ties to the pre-NIL era and the rules that defined it. There’s a delightful and cheeky irony in having them be the ones telling fans that now it’s finally their turn to get a deal. They immediately understood [the humor, leaned into it], and brought the kind of self-awareness that made the idea feel authentic rather than forcing.”
