Amidst the several delivery platforms existing in India and the rest of the world, Blinkit manages to stay ahead of the competition. In fact, its leader has a message for competitors. That they cannot copy Blinkit’s profitability style.
According to Statista, Blinkit’s revenue reached up to around $27 million. It is one of the most trusted quick-commerce and delivery platforms in India.
Warning
The chief executive officer of Blinkit, Albinder Dhindsa, recently sat down for an interview with The Economic Times, talking about the platform’s profitability and that of its competitors.
For Dhindsa, it is a “misconception.” This means that if Blinkit becomes profitable, it believes its competitors cannot do the same.
“There’s a misperception that if we are profitable, others can be too,” Dhindsa told the media. “Small deviations in a low-margin business like ours can lead to vastly different outcomes…this isn’t a straightforward business. Perspectives will vary, but replicating the same approach to achieve identical results is nearly impossible.”
For the Blinkit CEO, even if quick-commerce players in the market prioritize overall market share, it won’t be a sustainable approach. He emphasized that the success of the 10-minute delivery concept will depend on the right moves since the market is huge and still at its early stage.
Blinkit has gone a long way
Blinkit is one of the largest and most convenient hyper-local delivery companies in India. It enables customers like you to order groceries, fruits, vegetables, and other daily essential items directly via your mobile or web browser.
Since its founding, Blinkit has come a long way. It started in December 2023, and after seven years of operations as an Internet grocery delivery service, Blinkit has introduced express grocery deliveries in India by building dark stores across various cities.
On June 2022, Eternal, the company running Zomato, has decided to acquire Blinkit for over $560 million, completing the acquisition in August that year, too.
Thumbs-up on Blinkit’s ambulance service
There have also been several developments on Blinkit since then, such as what happened a day after New Year. On January 2nd, Dhindsa announced on X that it is launching a 10-minute ambulance service, starting in Gurugram, and expanding to other Indian cities in the next two years.
The CEO said the ambulances would have medical equipment like oxygen cylinders, Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs, monitors, stretchers, suction machines, injections, and emergency medicines, among others. The ambulance will also house a paramedic, an assistant, and a trained driver, of course.
This initiative has earned praise from certain notable individuals, such as Dr. Deepak Agrawal, a neurosurgery professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.
In one of his LinkedIn posts, he shared about how the Trauma Centre at the institute received services from the ambulance of Blinkit, attaching photos in action.
“This is the kind of service we used to read about and see in developed countries and is the healthcare revolution India has been waiting for (emoji),” Agrawal wrote.
As of press time, his post has garnered over 13,000 likes and many comments from his peers.
“Our National Highways need such kind of services,” commented Depanjan Biswas, also a founder and CEO of a company. “If a road accident victim could be taken to the hospital with such special care and within the golden hour, many lives could be saved.”
Meanwhile, others shared their suggestions on how else these programs can improve.
Abdul Hameed, working as an account manager, commented, “In those countries, these are considered basic facilities and are often provided free of charge in emergency situations. Otherwise, the cost is typically covered by insurance companies.”
He added that while he appreciates the effort, it should be understood how a vast portion of India’s population still lives below the poverty line, deprived access to life-saving healthcare for their loved ones.
“The disparity and partiality in basic healthcare are also evident, making these issues visible to everyone,” he stated.
But, of course, this itself is a fruitful achievement for Blinkit. Are you excited about what else Blinkit can provide? Be sure to share your thoughts with the Ridesharing Forum team. Happy weekend, guys!
