Amazon has recently officially launched a new digital tool that will speed up and optimize food distribution, reduce long lines, and allow more time for direct delivery.
The technology partnered, Altius Fondation, is working with Amazon and Amazon Web Services to speed up the delivery of meals to families in need in Spain.
Altius Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on social action and volunteerism, specifically among young people. Its goal is to support vulnerable groups, promote social inclusion, and strengthen the role of volunteering.
The foundation likewise works on educational initiatives, exploring new ways to transform learning and make it scalable and impactful.
This new tool, which AWS developed, digitizes operations and reduces waiting times, allowing the foundation to spend more time doing their work and interacting with community members. Waiting time, really, is a big problem in deliveries.
“We started working with Altius Foundation on food donation 12 years ago, and in 2024, we delivered more than three million meals to families in Spain. Today, the collaboration encompasses weekly deliveries of 4,000 kilograms of food from Amazon Fresh, training programmes, and the use of AWS technology for inventory management,” Amazon stated on its official newsroom page.
The Amazon Web Services developed the new tool via the pro bono AWS Giveback program. This program digitizes and automates “much of the foundation’s good reception and distribution processes.”
The result? A major improvement in service delivery, reducing wait times and paving the way for people to support those in need.
“At Amazon, we believe that access to food is a fundamental right. This is why we work with organisations worldwide that fight food insecurity,” stated María Baquedano, Head of Insight, Innovation and Social Impact in Amazon Spain and Portugal. “Our collaboration with Altius Foundation is one of our most comprehensive and advanced programmes globally, pioneering in many ways.”
Furthermore, this partnership with Altius includes vocational training, so unemployed people could be given a second chance.
“I came here looking for support and found much more,” stated a program beneficiary. “Thanks to the foundation and the AWS re/Start programme, I not only received technical training, but also a real opportunity to change my life. Today, I am proud to be able to help others from within.”
This partnership with the Altius Foundation was seen in action during the floods that affected some parts of Spain last year. The foundation also mobilized for the European Disaster Relief Hub, the regional distribution network, and dozens of employee volunteers.
Overall, AWS with Altius Foundation donated 265,000 essential items and facilitated the deliveries of over two million items that institutions have donated.
“The most important thing about this collaboration is that it is transforming real lives through a comprehensive model that combines technology, logistics, and human commitment,” stated Pablo Aledo, the CEO of Altius Foundation. “Every day we reach more people who need support.”
