Amazon Flex Driver Accused Of Stealing 100+ Packages From Customers

Lewis Andre’s Facebook Messenger chimed in. It’s a message from his cousin!

“We’re visiting you guys in Ontario [this Christmas],” the message read. “How cold can it be there? Should [we buy lots] of winter clothes?”

Lewis is also as excited as his cousins, but he couldn’t immediately respond to his messages as he is delivering for Fleet Optics, a Toronto-based third-party partner of Amazon Flex.

“I’d respond to you after I finish these…” Lewis then showed an image of a mound of delivery boxes inside the Amazon Flex truck.

Not him, but an Amazon Flex driver in Salt Lake City, Utah, is being accused of stealing between 100 to 200 packages, and keep them by themselves – or maybe selling them? – rather than delivering them.

The Toronto delivery driver, Lewis, won’t ever do that, or he’ll be kicked-out of the company. Though he posts pictures of his deliveries, sharing them to his cousins back home, such as his favorites, PC hardware like CPUs, and gaming PCs. But then again, he never steals them.

The said person, 28-year-old Mabel Tarache Sogamoso of West Valley City received a charge last October 22nd with mail theft and communications fraud, both second-degree felonies.

There was an investigation done which began August 18th when a loss-prevention employee with Amazon in Salt Lake City contacted the police about a worker who allegedly “had stolen Amazon packages while working as an Amazon Flex driver,” according to the charging documents.

So, apparently, this has been going on for so long before the charge. Actually, prosecutors have confirmed that Sogamoso had worked for Amazon for about a year before they found out the wrongdoing.

“During that time, Sogamoso would scan a package, which identified it as delivered, take a photo of an object in place of the package, and then keep the package instead of delivering it to the customer,” the charges pointed out. “The approximate value of the stolen merchandise was more than $5,000.”

And, Sogamoso was generous enough to admit “to taking the items and returned 122 items to Amazon," according to the charge documents, too.

There are no available information in ridesharing media about what types of items were stolen.

However, Salt Lake City’s police stated that the driver had already returned up to 200 items, valued at over $9,500.

Is Sogamoso suffering from kleptomania? ‘Coz getting a few items is quite normal for a wrongdoing, but 200 items?!

Prosecutors stated most of the items were stolen between May and August. Tell Ridesharingforum.com your thoughts! Get that account on RSF right now to join the discussions! Okay, ‘til then!
