DoorDash Forcing Their Customers To Tip - Or Their Orders To Delay?

Tipping culture is prevalent, especially in the USA, where not tipping is like missing your regular haircut. DoorDash may be following the trend too much.

The food delivery app is being criticized online after it reportedly notified a customer that not tipping their delivery driver would delay their order.

A post on Reddit is currently going viral, sharing a screenshot of the notification on the DoorDash official app.

With the page that says, “Add a tip,” plus a creative image and graphics, is the notification that reads, “Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered – are you sure you want to continue?”

The notification offered the options, “Add a tip,” and “Continue without tip.”

It added, “Dashers can pick and choose which orders they want to do. Orders that take longer to be accepted by Dashers tend to result in a slower delivery.”

This Reddit post led to a global conversation on social, with others lambasting the tipping culture.

A Reddit netizen commented, “The whole tipping culture is going to destroy the restaurant industry. I see more people commenting they just stop going out and myself included.”

To which another netizen responded, saying they’re reducing their food costs because of this nasty tipping culture.

“I’ve cut my eating out by about half. Not because cost, but because tipping and ‘it’s going to ask you a question’nope,” they wrote. “I used to go to Starbucks several times a week, got sick of the tip prompt at the drive through so I’m going to Dunkin these days, no tips requested.”

Sure, it will, indeed, destroy the restaurant industry.

According to American Express, the standard tip for eating out is around 20 percent. And yet, some countries in the world, such as in Southeast Asia, charges service fees, instead of requiring tips. Cool tactic.

Other comments go like, “I don’t use these companies unless I’m really sick or it’s an emergency. Even with tip service is still lousy, “This will just encourage more tip baiting,” “I think the first step is to push them to pay a full minimum wage,” and “This will help the servers not to rely heavily on tips. I know some states already started.”

DoorDash did not provide a statement, in whatever form, for the ridesharing media.

This popular food delivery app connects customers with local restaurants and stores through a mobile app and website. Users browse menus, place orders, and pay digitally. Dashers, independent delivery drivers, accept nearby orders, pick up items, and deliver them to customers’ doors, just like hailing a ridesharing car. DoorDash then earns revenue through delivery fees, service fees, and commissions charged to merchants for each fulfilled order. The platform also offers scheduling, real-time tracking, tips, promotions, and subscription benefits through DashPass.
